Incredible video shows a replica Spitfire perform a ideal
This is the dramatic moment that a hero pilot pulled off a daring emergency landing of his Spitfire without any wheels.
The man was flying his WWII replica spitfire above Sibson Airfield in Cambridgeshire over the weekend when his landing gear failed.
Emergency services were called to the scene as the pilot circled around for 20 minutes to burn fuel in a bid to reduce the plane’s speed.
People held their breath as the plane came into “land”, expecting the worst as its belly slid onto the grass.
Onlookers said the propeller fell off when it came to a safe stop, and the relieved pilot emerged completely unharmed.
The replica plane appears to be little damaged.
“It was very dramatic”.
Mr Woods, who had been skydiving at the airfield, said: “The pilot was circling, probably trying to use some fuel as he couldn’t get the wheels down”.
Mark guessed that the pilot “went off for a stiff drink and to nurse his ego” after making the incredible landing.
Eyewitnesses said the plane, which is kept in a private hangar at the airfield, got into difficulty at around 11.45am on Saturday.
The nerve-inducing moment he came into land was captured on camera, with three fire engines, two police cars and an ambulance at the scene.
A Cambridgeshire Fire Service spokesman said the first call of a plane in distress came in at about 11.45am.
According to the pilot, he could not release his landing gear which anxious him and posed a challenge for successful landing.
