Women Who Killed Baby In Microwave Is Jailed For Life
A Sacramento mother who killed her six-week old daughter by placing her in a microwave has received a 26-years-to-life sentence for the crime.
In 2011, Yang was convicted of first-degree murder and assault for putting her daughter in the microwave for up to five minutes at their home in Sacramento. Investigators later found the child’s pacifier in the microwave.
Leading into trial, the woman pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Although she had a history of seizures, paramedics did not find her to be disoriented when they arrived, according to the affidavit.
The baby girl suffered what authorities said were extensive thermal injuries.
The Independent reported that according to the prosecutors, the child was deliberately put in the microwave because she was disturbing Yang in her work.
When detectives pointed out inconsistencies in her story, Yang later acknowledged she lied and said she might have a split personality, the affidavit said.
Sacramento Superior Court Judge Steve White rejected a defense motion to seeking a retrial for Yang.
Yang is married and has three other children, three sons, under the ages of 10, all of whom were shortly after their sister’s death and removed from the family home by child welfare workers. Jurors accepted her defence that she was in an epilepsy-induced blackout and was not aware of her actions.
