New York Jets beat Dallas Cowboys, extend win streak to 4
And just when it seemed Todd Bowles’ team would fold under the pressure, his players did just enough to squeak out a win in Jerry’s World.
Randy Bullock kicked the winning 40-yard field goal with 36 seconds left and the Jets moved half a game ahead of Pittsburgh and Kansas City.
The Jets won their fourth consecutive game and clinched their first winning season since 2010, which also was the a year ago they qualified for the postseason. Another catalyst for the rally was backup Kenbrell Thompkins thrown in as a wide receiver, who caught a 43-yard pass from Fitzpatrick. That set up Bullock’s game victor.
And it will be a tall task for the Jets to win out after narrowly edging the Cowboys.
For more than three quarters, it was unclear which team wanted to lose more. His final interception sealed the Jets’ victory.
Fitzpatrick completed 26 of 39 passes for 299 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Two plays later, Fitzpatrick hit a wide-open Eric Decker near the goal line for a 3-yard TD.
Fitzpatrick also has the gift of working with wide recievers like Decker and Brandon Marshall, two pass-catchers who are truly the gift that keeps on giving (and also receiving).
But the Cowboys refused to go quietly.
Given the state of Dallas’ quarterback mess in 2015, it was not exactly a foregone conclusion that Moore would play his first ever regular-season snaps before the Cowboys were eliminated from NFC East contention.
Fitzpatrick and the offense needed to make it happen all over again after Dallas responded with a 50-yard field goal by Dan Bailey, tying the score at 16 with 1:55 left. It was Fitzpatrick “s first pick in four games (147 passes)”.
Fitzpatrick threw his first interception since November 22 to give the Cowboys a field goal and a 13-9 lead in the third quarter, but came back to direct a 70-yard drive to Decker’s score.
Cassel, who has started seven games in place of Romo, was replaced after two bumbling plays.
-RB Chris Ivory came into the game needing 86 rushing yards to reach 1,000 for the season. The Cowboys bungled a Cover-2, and the Jets made them pay.
Bills coach Rex Ryan called him a “little bitty lefty” after Moore played against the Bills with the Lions in the preseason. Moore may be the one bright spot moving forward to finish out a very disappointing season.
The matchup between Dez Bryant and Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis didn’t lead to many fireworks. They went 60 yards, with backup running back Bilal Powell going the final 12 yards for the first touchdown of the night.
Bullock missed his third PAT of the season in the second quarter after New York’s first touchdown.
The Cowboys switched quarterbacks in the second quarter.
No, Moore is probably not a future starting quarterback for the Cowboys – or for any other team, for that matter. Bad idea. That pass to Williams was intercepted by Marcus Gilchrist.
But, as Bowles noted at halftime to CBS, the Jets continued to shoot themselves in the foot. Kicker Randy Bullock missed an extra point and field goal in the first half.
Maybe no more Matt Cassel, either. Dee Milliner injured his hamstring and is day-to-day.
