Jets Push Past Cowboys
According to NFL.com, Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick only completed 26 of 39 passes and threw the same amount of touchdowns as interceptions (one).
The New York Jets kept themselves firmly in the AFC playoff race by slipping past the Dallas Cowboys 19-16 on Saturday night at AT&T Stadium.
But with time running out Ryan Fitzpatrick picked out Kenbrell Thompson with a 43-yard pass that brought the Jets within field-goal range and Bullock made no mistake from 40 yards to secure a fourth straight win.
Even though the Jets won Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers can still overtake them for the No. 6 seed in the AFC with a win Sunday over the Denver Broncos thanks to the common games tiebreaker.
Kellen Moore threw three picks, though the last one was not as much his problem – you throw a Hail Mary when it is called and hope the receiver can make a play. One play later, he hit Decker for a 3-yard score to give the Jets a 16-13 lead. The Jets’ offense finally found its groove.
The last chance for the Cowboys ended on Moore’s third interception when his desperation heave for Dez Bryant went over the outstretched arm of the receiver and was caught by Marcus Williams.
And it will be a tall task for the Jets to win out after narrowly edging the Cowboys. The truer test of his ability to play in the National Football League will come if/when he’s given an entire week to prepare as the starter. Kellen Moore replaced Cassel and offered up a trio of turnovers, including one on Dallas’ final offensive play of the evening.
The Cowboys had tied the score at 16 with a 50-yard field goal by Dan Bailey with two minutes left. Moore hooked up with Bryant four times for 50 yards and threw him seven passes on the night.
Wins are wins, no matter how ugly, and luckily for the Jets, the Cowboys (4-10) are their own worst enemy. Specifically, his play design on the goal line touchdown pass to wide receiver Eric Decker is a ideal example of his strengths and what he can do when he has a talented group to work with.
Moore had the Cowboys in position to extend their 10-9 halftime lead midway through the third quarter.
“We all start with aspirations”, said Jason Garrett, who had already clinched his first losing season as Dallas coach. For us this year that is not going to happen. The first was an interception when he stumbled and threw blindly to a spot where Darrelle Revis was all alone.
Cassel came out the series after taking a 19-yard sack, which wasn’t long after he left the field to loud boos following a three-and-out.
-RB Chris Ivory came into the game needing 86 rushing yards to reach 1,000 for the season. Dallas cornerback Terrance Mitchell, signed from the practice squad Friday, had his first career interception two plays later. A 4-1 start with a fresh-faced look all over the roster, followed by a 1-4 skid that cast doubt on the direction of the franchise.
As expected, Dallas linebacker Rolando McClain (concussion) and Morris Claiborne (hamstring) are out.
Tight end Gavin Escobar is out for the season after tearing his right Achilles in the fourth quarter Saturday.
