“Trumbo”, “Game of Thrones”, “Homeland”, “House of Cards” Lead SAG Award Nominees

NetflixThe Screen Actors Guild Awards is a year-end awards show that gets a lot of attention because the acting body of the Academy (which overlaps with SAG) is the largest among the groups that choose the Oscars every year.

See some of the most competitive categories with probable front-runners.

‘ Other lead movie actors nods went to Johnny Depp for “Black Mass, ‘ Leonardo DiCaprio for ‘The Revenant, ‘ Michael Fassbender for ‘Steve Jobs” and Eddie Redmayne for playing a transgender pioneer in ‘The Danish Girl.

Among the women, Cate Blanchett was nominated for the lesbian drama “Carol”, Brie Larson for psychological thriller “Room”, Saoirse Ronan for Irish immigrant tale “Brooklyn” and Sarah Silverman for “I Smile Back”.

Big winners in film included Trumbo, which leads the pack with three total nominations, while Carol, The Danish Girl, The Big Short, Steve Jobs, Room, Spotlight and Beasts of No Nation garnered two apiece.

Compton faces off against the Idris Elba-led Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short starring Christian Bale, Spotlight with Mark Ruffalo, and the Bryan Cranston-anchored Trumbo for the honor. Alec Baldwin will probably be winning SAG Awards for 30 Rock long after the zombie apocalypse eliminates NBC as we know it. So Wednesday’s nominations were heavy on typical SAG strangeness.

Rose’s status in Hollywood continues to rise with the former MTV Australia presenter nominated with her Orange is the New Black cast members for best ensemble in a TV comedy series.

The biggest surprises came in the miniseries/TV movie categories, where strong performances by David Oyelowo (“Nightingale”), Mo’Nique (“Bessie”), Claire Foy (“Wolf Hall“), and Oscar Isaac (“Show Me a Hero”) went unmentioned in favor of flashier fare and recognizable stars. SAG has just announced the nominees for its 2016 awards, which include Trumbo, Mad Men, and first-timer Key & Peele. Yet Silverman, not known for her acting, shocked with a best actress nomination seemingly out of nowhere. Nominees are selected by separate movie and TV nominating panels, each comprised of more than 2,000 randomly selected SAG members, and the organization’s choices highlighted a few underdog performances.

The Golden Globe nominations will further define the race for the Oscars on February 28.
