Manning not healthy enough to even be considered for backup role

Manning has been out for a month with a foot injury and Osweiler has been starting in his place for the Broncos, winning three out of four games.

Manning has played the role of scout-team quarterback this week as Brock Osweiler continues to get the first-team reps with the offense.

Mike Klis, the Denver Broncos beat reporter for Denver’s 9NEWS, writes that quarterback Peyton Manning suffered a minor setback in Friday’s practice at the Broncos’ Englewood team facility.

“He really had this foot problem”, Archie Manning told WDSU-TV in New Orleans. The team has ruled him out because of a sore foot, according to the Broncos’ website.

RB C.J. Anderson did not practice Wednesday, but Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak expects him to return to the field Thursday when the Broncos go back outside.

Kubiak’s standard offense puts the QB under center for the majority of snaps, whereas Manning has been running a hybrid offense that includes a lot of pistol-based formations. But after two practies, Manning was held out of the Broncos’ practice Friday.

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport originally reported on Sunday that the quarterback situation in Denver is hard, particularly for Manning, who Rapoport reported has no desire to be holding clipboards for Osweiler.

Archie Manning said they haven’t discussed it since then. While Gary Kubiak has not named a starter for the remainder of the season, he has a tough decision on his hands when Peyton Manning is deemed fully healthy. “We thought he would be ready to go, ” Kubiak said.

“I know that his foot has been sore since we left Indianapolis” on November 8, Kubiak said.

“If you’re kicking field goals in the red area and you’re not getting touchdowns eventually it will come back to bite you and that’s exactly what happened on Sunday and that’s what we are working on fixing”.
