73rd annual Golden Globe Awards nominations announced
In fairness, Thursday morning’s Golden Globe nominations are a harbinger of what’s already happening on television, as the revolution in when, where, what, and how we watch continues. It got four Golden Globes nominations, including one for the film’s star, Leonardo DiCaprio.
The nominations for the 2016 Golden Globes were announced today and she is up for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy for her role in Trainwreck. But the surprise leader of the pack is the summer action blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road. “The nominees for best foreign language film are: “The Brand New Testament”, “The Club”, “The Fencer”, Mustang”, and “Son of Saul”.
Fassbender is up against Will Smith, Johnny Depp, Eddie Redmayne and Bryan Cranston in his category at the awards, which will be hosted by Ricky Gervais.
“My mom and my manager @wanaynay are so emotional about our Best Actress Golden Globe Nomination and so happy for Ryan Murphy [Co-creator of “American Horror Story”] and the whole gang for HOTEL’s nomination for Best TV Series!” “House of Cards”, which more closely resembles a traditional political potboiler (it’s based on a British miniseries from the early 1990s, after all), was passed over for Best Drama and Best Actor Kevin Spacey, while progressive comedies “Orange Is the New Black” and “Master of None” combined for three nominations. Christian Bale and Steve Carell each received nominations for Best Actor for the film.
Globes’ defiance: In a year that has seen studios dubiously advocating that lead roles (including Vikander in “The Danish Girl“, Rooney Mara in “Carol“) be shoehorned into supporting categories, the Globes mostly did the right thing and positioned the performances correctly. Actress Rachel Bloom scored nomination for her performance in the charming freshman show that’s part sitcom, part musical.
In other film news of geeky interest, The Martian received a nominee for best motion picture in a comedy/musical. “The Martian”, a box-office hit and a possible Oscar favorite, stands a better chance of winning best picture at the Globes as a comedy than as a drama, where the field includes Tom McCarthy’s acclaimed Boston Globe drama “Spotlight“, Todd Haynes” “50s romance “Carol” and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s frontier epic “The Revenant”.
The nominees for best supporting actor are Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), Sylvester Stallone (Creed), Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation), Paul Dano (Love and Mercy), and Michael Shannon (99 Homes).
It remains to be seen if an Academy Awards heavyweight will be anywhere to be found at the January 10 Beverly Hills, Calif., ceremony.
Best animated feature nominations went to “Anomalisa”, “The Good Dinosaur”, “Inside Out”, “The Peanuts Movie” and “Shaun the Sheep”.
These are but a few of the great actors, actresses, directors, movies and shows that are nominated and have a chance to win as Golden Globe nominees.
Streaming series from Netflix, Amazon and Hulu dominated the TV side of the Globes, which scattered nominations across the dial. Six shows tied for the most nominations at three: “Fargo”, “Mr. Robot”, “Outlander”, “Transparent”, “American Crime” and “Wolf Hall”. The show will air on NBC.
