India’s top court rejects plea to reverse release of Delhi gang rapist

In the aftermath of the gang rape, a bill introduced in Parliament sought to amend the law to make exceptions to the three-year sentence limit in cases of heinous crimes.
News reports said the convict was moved on Sunday from the reform home where he had been kept to a new home under the care of a children’s rights group. It highlighted the severity and frequency of crimes against women in the country, where a rape is reported to the police every 20 minutes.

The Supreme Court had dismissed a plea of the DCW seeking to stay the release of the juvenile.

The victim’s parents led the onslaught of furious protestors, with the victim’s mother saying, “We want justice for our daughter”.
Justice AK Goel said, “We share your concern, but we can not curtail his liberty without sanction of law”.
When contacted, the father of the victim said that they had gathered for a peaceful demonstration near the correction home in Majnu Ka Tila against the release of the juvenile convict but the police detained them.
The juvenile convicted for the 2012 gang rape, along with five other men, is out of the correctional home, Delhi Police said on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly and BJP leader Vijender Gupta accused the Delhi government of trying to “create drama” over the release of the juvenile convict.
The parents of the victim protested in the national capital yesterday.
Ms Singh died soon after from the injuries inflicted upon her during the assault.
The release became possible notwithstanding the Delhi Commission for Women’s late night effort to stall it as the Supreme Court post-midnight held a sitting and refused to stay the release.
Rejecting the DCW’s petition, the apex court earlier said that under existing law detention can not go beyond three years.
As of now only one convict has been released. “There are around 30-35 people in this bus and we have already crossed Majnu Ka Tilla (in north Delhi)”, Badrinath told IANS over phone.
