Mistake Crowns Miss Colombia Before Miss Philippines
Asked how she’d feel about traveling to Latin America after the incident, she said, “I won Miss Universe based on the judges’ vote…”
Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, was in pageant heaven after host Steve Harvey announced her as the victor of Sunday night’s contest.
Gutierrez, 21, began celebrating after she was mistakenly announced as the victor, waving a Colombian flag, only for the crown to be taken off of her head and placed on that of Wurtzbach, a 26-year-old actress.
Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines was crowned Miss Universe 2015, but only after some stage drama.
Harvey said later no one felt worse than he did about his mistake.
Harvey later apologised on Twitter citing an “honest human mistake”.
The celebrity businessman took full ownership of the Miss Universe Organization from NBC in September, before turning around and selling it to talent agency WME-IMG. When I purchased the pageants many years ago, they were in serious trouble. Gutierrez was incorrectly crowned before Wurtzbach was named Miss Universe.
Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, just stood there uncomfortably seemingly not knowing what to do. Awkward. The pageant was televised live in many countries, including on the Fox network in the United States.
It was the first edition of the annual beauty show since it was thrust into controversy when then co-owner and USA presidential candidate, Donald Trump, made disparaging remarks about immigrants.
Harvey initially named Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo, as the night’s big victor, relegating the remaining contestant, Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurzbach, to the second runner-up spot.
“Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines”, he added After the show, Harvey, who is best known as the host of TV show “Family Feud”, used his Twitter account to apologize again to Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines.
The previous title for the country was won by Margie Moran-Floirendo in 1973.
