Miss Universe 2015: See the moment the wrong victor was crowned
Comedian Steve Harvey made the biggest mistake of his career last night – when he named the WRONG beauty queen as victor of Miss Universe.
Mr. Harvey did not stick around, swiftly heading for stage right as Miss Philippines took her place beside Miss Colombia, still clutching her flowers and wearing the crown.
Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, was then declared the victor.
“I tell you what I think I’d do, I think I’d make them a co-winner, it would be very cool”, he said.
Steve quickly apologized on stage: “Listen, folks”.
She earlier said her motivation to win was to use her voice “to influence youth”.
Well, you can go on reading some interesting facts about the newly-crowned Miss Universe 2015. Misreading the finalists, Harvey said Miss Colombia was the victor but she was actually the first runner-up and Miss Philippines was the real victor. Elsewhere, people were rating the incident as the most awkward moment in pageant history.
“Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines”, Harvey said.
He mistakenly announced Miss Colombia had won the pageant with the Philippines contestant as runner-up.
The crown was then taken off Arevalo’s head and placed directly onto Wurtzbach’s.
It was a gaffe made for the age of Twitter, GIFs, Vines and 24/7 social media snark.
Saying she’s now the voice of Miss Universe she apologized for what happened on behalf of the organization.
Harvey also took to Twitter to apologize. In the end his mistake gave a the Miss Universe pageant a much needed publicity push. “Unfortunately, a live telecast means that human error can come into play”, read the official statement from the organizers. I know how much pride many countries, fans and most importantly, the contestants take in preparing for this night.
