Special prosecutors have been meeting with a grand jury in Waller County, west of Houston, to examine evidence and decide if any criminal charges should be filed related to Bland’s death last summer. Bland’s family members complained they have not been interviewed and have generally not been included in the process.
Sandra Bland, 28, was arrested July 10 in Waller County, Texas, during a confrontational traffic stop about 50 miles from Houston.
In November, lawyers for the Waller County jail officials claimed Bland killed herself because her family took too long to bail her out of jail.
Grand jurors considered evidence collected by a team of five special prosecutors named by the county’s district attorney, Elton Mathis. Her family and others questioned that account.
Among evidence presented in the secret grand jury proceedings were the findings of a Texas Rangers’ investigation.
