New Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink would love to recruit Didier Drogba
Hiddink has replaced Jose Mourinho, who was shown the door for the second time after leading Chelsea to the worst ever title defence in the history of the Premier League, with the West London club languishing in 15th place having won the title past year.
Several Chelsea players were booed by supporters despite the hosts marching to an early 2-0 lead at home to Sunderland, with Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa labelled “rats” on one banner.
Terry said: “If it was the case where you could get rid of a lot of players I’m sure clubs would do that, but unfortunately it does fall on the manager’s head, there’s nothing we can do about that”. Players will be happy and play with habit of freedom; it all stems from results.
This odd atmosphere – not quite toxic, but certainly not something you would want to drink to – pervaded the whole afternoon and must have made things feel uncomfortable for the watching Hiddink. For Chelsea, being the big club we are, it is unacceptable for us to be in this position.
‘We have to be honest with each other and honest with ourselves, then win a couple of games in a row and stick with that for a long time to get back to winning regularly, because it is important for the club’. “The manager has lost his job because of that”.
“Listen, I think that from the first-half performance, who knows?” he said. [But] we are delighted to have put in a very good performance and picked up the three points. “He is flawless to play for us”.
“He is strong mentally and very competitive. He is happy to be here”.
Hiddink was confirmed as Chelsea boss until the end of the season prior to Saturday’s match with Sunderland at Stamford Bridge and watched from the stands alongside club legend Didier Drogba and owner Roman Abramovich as goals from Ivanovic, Pedro and Oscar secured a 3-1 victory.
However with another season remaining on his playing contract with Montreal Impact in the MLS, the Stamford Bridge hierarchy have stressed that such a scenario is now out of the question.
