Texans take control of division with 16-10 win at Indy
Houston Texans’ Brandon Weeden throws during the second half of an NFL football game against the Indianapolis Colts, Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015, in Indianapolis. Colts’ D’Qwell Jackson (52) defends on the play. So it could very well be Charlie Whitehurst starting on Sunday for Indianapolis, and either way I’d expect the team to add another quarterback – either to the active roster or to the practice squad – since Alex Tanney was signed off of the team’s practice squad today by the Titans.
Weeden led Houston to two field goals before throwing an 8-yard go-ahead touchdown pass to Jaelen Strong with 10:36 left to help Houston rally for a 16-10 victory.
“T.J. Yates did tear his ACL, unfortunately”, O’Brien said Monday. The team now stands all alone in first place in the AFC South at 7-7 with just two games to go. The Colts have produced two offensive touchdowns in their three-game losing streak, on drives of 42 and 48 yards, while failing to convert nine other red-zone opportunities. Eventually, he signed with Dallas, was benched in October and cut in November.
Thanks to a stifling defense, which allowed just 190 yards, and the resurgence of Weeden, the Texans now have the inside track to their third division crown in five years.
Brian Hoyer’s status remains unknown heading into Sunday’s game at Tennessee. I think I settled down and started really communicating and getting guys lined up.
EMPTY MILESTONES: Vinatieri passed Jerry Rice for No. 6 in games played (304), Hasselbeck tied Terry Bradshaw and Y.A. Tittle for No. 30 in league history in TD passes (212), Andre Johnson (14,015) passed James Lofton for No. 9 on the career list for receiving yards, receiver T.Y. Hilton topped the 1,000-yard mark for the third straight season and running back Frank Gore reached the 15,000-yard mark from scrimmage.
Weeden outplayed Yates, who completed six passes on ten attempts for 68 yards.
The Colts (6-8) weren’t in much better shape.
Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano can’t say enough about quarterback Matt Hasselbeck’s grit in playing despite his numerous medical issues over the last several weeks. He also threw an interception.
“It was just a tough, tough day”, Hasselbeck said. “Call me naive, but there’s still a chance”.
The Texans wouldn’t allow it.
The Colts also kept them in the game by failing to take advantage of turnovers and good field position in the first half.
But Houston didn’t let the Colts’ offense get started in the second half. Novak’s late 32-yard field goal closed it out. I don’t know what he is but he’s not the same guy we saw earlier.
-Wide receiver Phillip Dorsett (ankle) was hurt against Houston but is expected to be OK to practice and play this week. Was Weeden the MVP of the game…no, but he did play well when it mattered.
This time, with a backup plan, Houston got the upper hand.
