IMAX dishes out Star Wars numbers
“Jurassic World” producer Frank Marshall tweeted out the following image congratulating the cast and crew of “Star Wars” for besting the dinos at the box office. Force Awakens’ Monday is set to take down Spider-Man 2’s all-time Monday record of $27.7M which it has held since July 5, 2004. Or HP, which can help even the biggest Star Wars geek find the girl of his dreams, with a little help from R2D2.
The Force Awakens came out this weekend, and it made a lot of money, very fast. The Force Awakens has a metascore of 81, a Rotten Tomatoes tomatometer of 95%, and an IMDB rating of 8.8.
Financial and critical success for the film mark a victory for Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger’s strategy of acquiring proven brands, including Pixar Animation and comic book powerhouse Marvel, to fuel Disney’s entertainment empire. The movie racked up more than $100 million in pre-sales by its Thursday night opening.
That film had the advantage of opening in China on the same weekend it opened everywhere else.
In 1977, when Star Wars surpassed Jaws to become the highest-grossing film of all time, Steven Spielberg wrote an affectionate and public note to his old friend George Lucas to congratulate him. New cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Lupita Nyong’o in the film were mixed with longtime series regulars like Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. It’s possible, though far from certain, that it could eventually overtake Avatar as the biggest box office hit of all time (not adjusting for inflation).

But just how big were the numbers?
“Star Wars” ticket sales remain strong four days after the American premiere, and the movie is expected to have a long life at theaters.
Subway is just one of dozens of corporate sponsorships the Star Wars movie’s parent company, Disney, is partnering on.

The final box office tally of $238 million overcame even the most optimistic prediction of box office returns for the film, set at $220 million.
