East Towne Mall Shooting
Police are at the scene of a shooting at a busy mall in Madison, Wisconsin.
East Towne Mall is now closed falling a shooting incident early Saturday afternoon. The man faced injuries that were not life-threatening, according to authorities.
Another Madison shopping center, West Towne Mall, was locked down in February after two gangs got into a dispute which ended in gunfire outside the mall, according to the State Journal.
A Madison police officer said the mall is secure, but did not release further details.
The 840,000-square-foot mall, which was likely packed with “thousands” of people on the Saturday before Christmas, was evacuated and remained closed early Saturday evening, Despain said.
Holiday shoppers scurried for cover when a shot was sacked.
One pulled out a handgun and fired at least one round, striking a 19-year-old who was part of the initial dispute, DeSpain said. “What it appears to be is a very isolated contained event”, says David Dexheimer from the Madison Police Department. All of the people involved in the fight fled after the shooting, police said. WKOW reports Madison Police have taken the lead on the investigation, which is ongoing. The couple identified as the shooters were later killed by police.
