Steve Harvey Announces Wrong Winner at Miss Universe Pageant
A seven-second behind-the-scenes video shows Harvey immediately after naming the wrong victor – Miss Colombia instead of Miss Philippines – pointing to a cue card and talking to an unidentified person saying: “The teleprompter said Miss Universe – Colombia”.
Miss Philippines did end up receiving the diamond and blue topaz crown, but Miss Germany said she was surprise because none of the contestants voted for her. While waiting for the go signal from security, she told us: “are you looking for Miss Philippines?”
“I’d like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake”, he wrote.
Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, left, and Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez react as Gutierrez is mistakenly named Miss Universe 2015.
The Miss Universe 2015 pageant has been absolutely filled with turmoil and controversy, and it doesn’t stop with Steve Harvey’s mistakes.
Steve Harvey the wildly successful author, talk and game show host is in no danger of losing his livelihood. “I have to apologize”.
At first, it looked as if Colombia’s contestant had won.
Not that I would ever have such a large stage as Harvey, but I-and I suspect most broadcasters-live with a nagging fear of making a momentous mistake … the kind that explodes on social media and then hangs there forever. In the video, it appears that Miss Philippines has far less support from her fellow competitors than Miss Colombia. Steve is actually my Frat brother and I appreciate him as an honorable man stepping back into the fire and taking responsibility, as well as the expected “heat!” The first runner-up is Colombia.
“It is my mistake”, he said.
‘I don’t want to take away from this wonderful night and pageant’.
“Thank you for voting for me”, said Gutiérrez who insisted that she wasn’t annoyed with the whole embarrassing fiasco.
Many viewers agreed and tweeted that Gutierrez was the epitome of grace. “OK folks, I have to apologise”.
Unlike previous pageants were the victor takes a final walk around the stage on her own, this year’s victor had to go around with someone tagging beside her, probably an organizer, who will protect her from some of the angry audience who are probably seeing red by then.
The epic blunder caught the attention of the world, making #MissUniverse2015 a worldwide trending topic on Twitter.
Even President Benigno Aquino chimed in.
Arevalo accepted the crown and waved to the crowd, thinking she was the victor.
“I really couldn’t believe it, I was so upset”.
After all, as local commentators have been harping, it’s been 42 years since our country’s bet was last crowned Miss Universe with Margie Moran in 1973 and Gloria Diaz in 1969. “It’d be very cool”, Trump said.
He added: “Things happen”. “Steve is a comedian, so I thought he was making a freakish joke”.
