Giants Beckham hit with one-game suspension
That’s a serious game day lesson to be learned for Odell Beckham Jr.
Three times this season, the Panthers have given up big leads to opponents before pulling out a win in the closing minutes or seconds – against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 8, the Green Bay Packers in Week 9, and Sunday against the Giants. He tore ligaments in his left knee late in the 2013 season.
He scuffled and fought all game with Panthers cornerback Josh Norman, drawing three unnecessary roughness penalties, including one for launching himself helmet-first into Norman’s head during the third-quarter.
Barring the overturning of his suspension, Beckham is eligible for reinstatement on Monday, December 28.
He also understands the cheap tactics that the Panthers were using such as bats and slurs to get under his skin, but at the same time he had to let to Beckham, Jr. know that as a leader he has to be above that and there for his team more importantly. If I see a guy instigating, I’m going to pull him aside and talk to him.
Beckham may or may not get away with it, as the league may still suspend him – or at the very least, fine him. Apparently the Panthers brought the bat with them for the first time on the road as a symbol for their injured teammate.
Those allegations surfaced later, but after the game, Panthers coach Ron Rivera focused on his team’s loss of composure. “They’re a distraction. They break concentration”. It’s not about the individual. “This particular franchise and organization does not tolerate that”.
“For the coaches, their preparation will be a little quicker – most of the (game) tape has been broken down that they need, and they just have to add the last game”, Rivera said. They will have offers on the table if he plays well, but the Titans must decide whether parting ways with an outstanding young backup will be worth what will likely be a middle-round draft pick. “At numerous times during yesterday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, your actions placed a fellow player at unnecessary risk… and clearly did not represent the high standards of sportsmanship expected”, NFL Vice President of Football Operations Merton Hankds wrote in a letter to Beckham. The transgressions range from a kick, to a punch, to slamming down his helmet. If nothing else, the Giants’ lack of leadership was apparent when not one player was able to get Beckham to calm down. Commissioner Roger Goodell seems to frown upon any petulance and remorselessness. “We just had to find ways”.
“We all know that the personal battles have no presence in the game of football, not at any level”, Coughlin said. Seven of their eight losses have been by a total of 21 points, and six of them have been by four points or less.
The second-overall pick from OR dealt with lots of change as he lost receiver after receiver to injury, and the coach that drafted him, all during the season. After the Panthers were up 35-7 over the Giants, they allowed NY to tie it up 35-35.
That’s a short list of NFL players whose careers were ended by accidents on the football field.
But in examining previous cases, history suggests Beckham’s chances of getting the suspension wiped out so he can play Sunday night against the Vikings are rather slim.
“It was kind of a weird feeling in that locker room, and I’m still feeling kind of weird, but not enough to (not) celebrate”, Newton said. “I think both those guys were going at it. I don’t think either one was in the right, but I didn’t think one was worse than the other”.
In his first 25 games, Beckham had more catches, yards and touchdowns than any other receiver at the same juncture.
