NFL Suspends Giants’ Odell Beckham Jr. After Panthers Game Personal Fouls
Odell Beckham, Jr., the star wide receiver for the New York Giants, has been suspended for one game without pay from the National Football League for his controversial actions yesterday during the Giants’ tough 38-35 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Is there any real shock the league is attempting to fill the void, particularly in an era when player safety is paramount, in the very week the “Concussion” movie is hitting theaters? What’s more, while Beckham was allowing cornerback Josh Norman to mess with his head, the Giants’ passing game literally got a look at what life without an effective Beckham might be like and it’s not pretty. Norman also drew a flag for hitting Beckham in the helmet. They repeatedly were shoving and wrestling with each other.
Beckham leads the Giants with 91 catches for 1,396 yards and 13 touchdowns. Had Beckham done the things he did to Norman on a city street rather than on the field at MetLife stadium, it nearly certainly would have fetched him at least a charge of assault and battery, perhaps even aggravated battery for that head-to-head shot well after and away from the play.
The suspension was imposed by NFL Vice President of Football Operations Merton Hanks.
Asked what kind of effect playing without Beckham would have on those chances, Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Monday, “You ask a question that requires no answer”.
“The conduct of other players in the Panthers-Giants game is being reviewed for potential discipline in the form of fines.”
He would be reinstated next Monday.
The game on Sunday surprised me because it doesn’t happen as often as it does. There was no media availability with Beckham on Monday. That being said, pulling your best player off the field in a game you have to have is tough to do. “You go back and watch the film tomorrow and you learn from it”.
Yet as much as they are focused on Sunday’s game, this is Beckham’s future at stake. Beckham was penalized three times for three unnecessary roughness and Norman got two.
Cam Newton has been instrumental in Carolina Panthers’ ideal 14-0 record this season.
– The Giants have lost three consecutive home games for the second consecutive season. When it doesn’t go his way, he acts like a three-year old. They prevent the great game of football from being played as a team, team sport.
We value thoughtful comments representing a range of views that make their point quickly and politely.
Making his first regular-season appearance late in his fourth year in the NFL, Moore sparked the offense after replacing an ineffective Matt Cassel in the second quarter of a 19-16 loss to the New York Jets on Saturday. There probably is, but that’s to be decided when we get to the next game.
Woodson to retire • Raiders safety Charles Woodson said he will retire at the end of the season, his 18th in the NFL.
“These guys are players, and these guys want to play”, Rivera said. There are a lot of injuries in one game for a reason. Woodson’s 65 career interceptions rank him fifth all-time and obviously first among active players.
In papers filed earlier this month, the NFL Players Association argued Goodell ignored the collectively bargained agreement between the league and the union when he upheld the suspension in July. Beckham also graced the cover of Madden NFL 2016, the best-selling sports video game.
