Southbound lanes of Arkansas interstate reopen
Ten vehicles were involved in this crash. State Trooper Jamie Gravier says authorities believe a vehicle ran into the rear of an 18-wheeler that had slowed because of dense fog, setting off the chain reaction that claimed 3 lives.
For a time, both north- and southbound lanes along parts of I-49 were closed.
Interstate 49 in southwest Arkansas remains blocked after an overnight wreck left three people dead and at least seven others hurt, Arkansas State Police said.
The Associated Press reported via KSLA-TV that there were accidents in both the northbound and southbound lanes of I-49, and the second crash may have occurred when drivers going northbound were looking at the first accident. One of the trucks was carrying glue that spilled onto the highway, cops said. Traffic is being re-rerouted near Fouke along US 71.
The crash happened in an area about 160 miles southwest of Little Rock.
Miller County Sheriff’s office and numerous volunteer fire departments also responded.
Initial reports indicate there is an unconfirmed number of fatalities and personal injuries involving individuals found at the crash scene. Gravier said they expect to stay on scene well into the afternoon.
