John Boyega surprises Star Wars fans
You may not have thought it was possible for J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens to break any more records during this first few days of release, but that’s exactly what’s happened.
Fans of “Star Wars” have dominated social media over the weekend, with more than 64 million people engaging in 140 million interactions about the franchise on Facebook, the company said on Monday.
The highly anticipated seventh installment of the space saga has blazed a record-setting trail since its domestic debut last Thursday, taking the prize for highest-grossing domestic opening night with $57 million and biggest domestic single-day sales Friday with $120.5 million. The film earned an additional $279 million overseas, as reported by The Wall Street Journal, for the grand total of $518 million.
As far as all-time box office sales, two films by James Cameron hold the record – “Avatar” ($2.78 billion) and “Titanic” ($2.18 billion), and it is expected that “The Force Awakens” might unseat both.
“…The successful theatrical revival of Star Wars kicks off a multi-year, cross-divisional, hugely profitable franchise for Disney”, she said. They are going to make a big multiple on that $4 billion investment on Lucasfilm. If Episodes VIII and Episode IX each gross over $1 billion worldwide, then Disney would essentially break even on the acquisition just on the three films’ theatrical run alone.
In third place, the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler comedy “Sisters” earned an estimated $13.42 million in its opening weekend.
The Disney movie sold out across the US and was a big draw around the world.
On top of that, using Rentrak’s in-theater polling service PostTrak, initial data from “The Force Awakens” suggests there’s a “big push from male audiences”.
Yesterday’s estimates bring the North American total for “The Force Awakens” to $288 million.
4,134 – Number of theaters the film opened in.
