Famed CBGB to reopen its doors – as Newark airport restaurant
CBGB, which stands for Country, Bluegrass and Blues, opened in 1973 by the late Hilly Kristal and quickly became the famed venue of rock and new wave bands. According to Grub Street, the restaurant will offer “American fare in a fun environment recalling the legendary music venue”.
Whether you were around in CBGB’s hay day or never got to visit the legendary club before it shut its doors in 2006, now’s your chance to get a taste… literally. CBGB is coming back as CBGB L.A.B.
In a notable turn from its rebellious past, CBGB will join such eateries as Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, Jamba Juice and Manchu Wok at Newark Airport in January.
Thanks, but we’ll remember the CBGB of the 70’s and 80’s and not the bastardization of the great name. (Lounge and Bar), and opening up in Newark International Airport in New Jersey. And Patti Smith-the godmother of punk-played the club’s final performance in 2006. The menu at CBGB “will include $9 deviled eggs, an $11.50 wedge salad, and a $14 cheeseburger”. The following year, its founder and owner Hilly Kristal died of lung cancer. In 2008, clothing designer John Varvatos took over the space and turned it into a retail store.
