Chelsea plays solid game and eliminates Porto from Champions League
Willian of Chelsea shoots and scores their scond goal against FC Porto in Wednesday’s Champions League victory.
However, the win over Porto last night meant that Mourinho’s side finished top of Group G as he hints that his team can still win the entire competition given their underdog status.
What I am particularly happy about is the fact that we only needed one point to qualify but the players accepted the challenge of playing to win.
“They were compact and always had initiative, they tried to win even when the draw would have been enough”.
The pair worked together at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013 but their relationship turned sour during Mourinho’s final season at the club. The Europa League is a new competition for me and I’m looking forward to it. We’ll try and do the best we can.
“In the Premier League everything goes against us, every detail does against us, the players feel it’s an attack to their confidence, to their self-esteem”.
“The start of the season has not been good for me – not in how I have played nor in goals”.
The Blues will learn their next opponents after Monday’s (Tuesday NZ time) draw and could face either Paris St Germain, PSV Eindhoven, Benfica, Juventus, Roma or Gent.
“I think everybody wants to play us”, he added.
“The first goal was obviously an own goal but his movement was great when the pass arrived”. And when he looks to the linesman he loses one important second or fraction and then his last touch on the ball is not the best touch. “Results don’t say we aren’t committed to the manager”, the Belgian told the club’s website (www.chelseafc.com).
However, despite securing progression to the knockout stages of the Champions League, Mourinho also focussed on his side’s disappointing form in his post-game comments.
Both sides know that a loss would jeopardise their chances of qualifying for the Round of 16, however, Porto have been firing as of late, and Chelsea have not.
