Two Indiana school districts shut down amid threats toward schools
School officials in Miami and Fort Lauderdale haven’t released details about the threats, but said on their websites they were similar to those received in NY and Los Angeles earlier in the week.
Schools in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, and Dallas received threatening emails Wednesday evening similar to the ones that closed Los Angeles schools earlier this week.
Orange County Public Schools on Thursday said it received a threatening email similar to ones received in school districts in Los Angeles, New York, Houston and Miami.
Parent Mohammed Rizik says he received a voicemail from the district saying all of the San Francisco schools have been inspected and nothing suspicious was found. Rizik said, “How long are we going to be this way?” Schools in those areas and in Clark County, which educates 320,000 students, opened normally. “Parents are responding emotionally, and school staff oftentimes respond to the community anxiety and potential pushback that they may get if they leave kids in school”. On Tuesday, Los Angeles shut down schools over emailed threats that later deemed a hoax.
New York City schools also received a similar threat but officials there concluded it was a hoax. The move reflected lingering unease in Southern California following the attack that killed 14 people at a holiday luncheon two weeks ago in San Bernardino.
“The threat is still being analyzed”, he said.
“We want our entire community to know we are safe”, Superintendent Barbara Jenkins said at a news conference.
Plainfield police subsequently received a copy of a detailed social media posting, indicating that a person was going to open fire and set pipe bombs throughout the high school. We are working with local law enforcement agencies and are following appropriate protocol.
The Plainfield Community School Corporation has about 5,000 students and is located about 15 miles west of downtown Indianapolis.
According to Mesquite Police Department’s Lieutenant MaQuade Chesley, MPD had not received any notification from CCSD or other agencies that would call for a need of heightened security at Mesquite Schools. A threat has been directed to the high school, and the safety and security of all students is our highest priority. They’re accused of making threats against schools in separate incidents.
In central IN, two school districts canceled classes Thursday.
A third suburban Indianapolis school district canceled classes after receiving a threat.
