Ohio Gov. Kasich enters 2016 presidential race
And folks, as it has been said many times, the light of the city on a hill can not be hidden. Ready to get unlimited access to all of WORLD’s member content? Questions remain about his discipline, whether he is able to raise enough money to compete and whether he can break through in a crowded field.
What Kasich didn’t go into great detail about during his about 45-minute speech is specific policy plans.
This is Kasich’s second bid for the presidency. Empathy, he said, is critical to governing.
“The Lord wants our hearts to reach out to those who don’t have what we have”, Kasich said.
He also talked about helping those who can not help themselves, including the drug addicted and the mentally ill.
He added, however, all Americans must take personal responsibility for their lives.
Kasich is often described as a moderate. He said his record as governor and as a nine-term Congressman give him the skills to find solutions. He spent almost 20 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, winning a reputation as a national security and fiscal hawk who pushed for a balanced-budget amendment. He cited his extensive experience on the Armed Services Committee, where he worked to cut wasteful spending.
Given how much 2016 competition the Ohio Republican faces, this should effectively end the conversation and doom Kasich’s campaign before it starts.
It remains to be seen if Kasich will get an announcement bump in the polls.
“The last thing we need in a president is the Lehman Brothers approach to America, ” TJ Helmstetter, Midwest press secretary for the Democratic National Committee, said in a statement after Kasich’s comment in Nashua.
“It’s about vision, it’s about values”, he said. It’s about vision, about values – and we don’t not have the right as grownups to ring up debts to suit ourselves and pass them on to the next generation, ” he said.
Has Kasich entered the race too late to have a fighting chance?
In March 2011, just two months after he was sworn in, Kasich signed a bill created to restrict collective bargaining for public-sector workers.
What’s more, during his time in Congress, Kasich even voted for the assault-weapons ban.
The Ohio governor alluded to a reduction in government dependence – an important staple for the conservative base.
Bucking the trend of other Republican governors, some of them running for president in 2016, Kasich expanded Medicaid in his state under the Affordable Care Act.
And several serious contenders didn’t really get it going until about this point in the process or later. “You better have a good answer”.
Kasich rekindled the crowd’s affections for Ronald Reagan and referenced the fact that he ran Reagan’s Ohio campaign in 1976, when Kasich was only 24 years old.
A Washington Post-ABC News poll showed Mr Trump ahead of the field with 24 per cent support against 13 per cent for his nearest rival, Scott Walker, the Governor of Wisconsin.
Toledo Blade editor David Kushma noted that Kasich’s “tenure at Fox News, where he honed his heartland persona, helped make him media-savvy”.
