Drudge Report, Internet Freak Out Over Google’s Robot Reindeer Army
Boston Dynamics wants you to meet their robots.
Did Boston Dynamics realize that their holiday greeting was, um, a little off-putting?
American engineering firm Boston Dynamics has created a group of robot reindeer that are capable of dragging Santa’s sled, as revealed in its Christmas message.
The reindeer robots featured in the video appear to be variations on the company’s canine-inspired Spot robots, which are designed for navigating indoor and outdoor terrain.
Using three Spot robots, slightly smaller versions of BigDog, the company showed off their capabilities and celebrated the season by getting them to take the place of Santa’s reindeer.
It’s nice to get a festive message from big companies sometimes.
Boston Dynamics lists Spot as a 160-pound four-legged robot that can operate indoors and outdoors. While this feat of technology is obviously nothing short of remarkable, some YouTube viewers have admitted they felt quite unsettled at the sight of robots taking over this traditional Christmas imagery.
The 6-foot tall android can skillfully perform complex tasks, its articulated hands allowing it to effectively manipulate tools.
