What We Know About Lakeisha Holloway, the Las Vegas Crash Suspect
Authorities say Holloway repeatedly swerved Sunday onto the sidewalk packed with tourists in front of the Paris Las Vegas and Planet Hollywood casino-hotels. Her 3-year-old daughter was in the auto with her at the time, and was uninjured, notes the report.
An Oregon mom who had been living in her auto with her 3-year-old daughter faces murder charges after she allegedly drove her vehicle into a bustling Las Vegas commercial strip, killing one and injuring dozens, according to various media accounts.
Severin Walsh said Tuesday that once all four tires were back on the ground, the female driver sped forward, steering around light poles and street signs to hit people in the crowd.
“She would not explain why she drove onto the sidewalk but remembered a body bouncing off of her windshield, breaking it”, authorities said in her arrest report.
Lakeisha Holloway, 24, has been charged with one count of murder with use of a deadly weapon and one count of child abuse, neglected or endangerment.
After her arrest, Holloway “described a stressful period today where she was trying to rest/sleep inside her vehicle with her daughter but kept getting run off by security of the properties she stopped at”, a police report states.
Jessica Valenzuela, a 32-year-old mother of three from Buckeye, Ariz., was killed in the incident and at least 35 other people were injured, including several Canadians.
The person in the video is markedly different to the woman who told police on Sunday that she ended up broke on the Las Vegas Strip, “a place she did not want to be”. The coroner said the suburban Phoenix woman was visiting Las Vegas with her husband.
“She didn’t appear to be distressed due to her actions”, Mr Lombardo said, adding that her child was unharmed.
She parked at a casino a few blocks from the Strip, told a parking attendant that she had run down people and asked the valet to call 911, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said.
She had changed her name to Paris Paradise Morton in October, according to OR court records.
Antonio Nassar saw the crash on his way out of Planet Hollywood, he told the Las Vegas Sun.
Holloway denied being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and police would not comment on her motive for driving onto the sidewalk, the news service said. The couple may have had a falling out but it was unclear what might have “caused her to snap”, he said. The auto was fully on the walkway twice, including once when it travelled 200 feet, police said.
Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson indicated more charges are likely.
Prosecutors on Tuesday formally charged Ms Holloway, 24, with murder.
Holloway’s cousin LaShay Hardaway told Las Vegas television station KSNV, “Our family is definitely praying for those victims”. Deputy Clark County Public Defender Scott Coffee told the Associated Press that Holloway remains under suicide watch at the jail where she is being held.
Lombardo said the victims were from Oregon, Colorado, Florida, California, Washington, Mexico and Quebec, Canada.
A defense attorney for a woman accused of plowing her auto through crowds of pedestrians on the Las Vegas Strip says it’s too soon to say if her mental condition will become part of her defense. Two of the teams, Pacific University of OR, and Delaware Valley University, pulled out of the competition Monday, as four Pacific team members were injured and five Delaware Valley athletes were reported injured.
