New poll finds half of USA voters embarrassed with Trump as president
Nobody backed up Cruz but several senators supported McConnell. In the most recent GOP debate, Cruz clarified he would tailor the bombing to where the enemy is, not necessarily level entire cities. The Texan’s dissembling on immigration has provided tasty fodder for the conservative commentariat.
Republican presidential contender Ted Cruz went round and round Friday with Fox News host Greta Van Susteren over his previous stance on legalizing illegal immigrants.
The ad comes as Cruz’s team has worked hard to damage Rubio’s standing with the GOP’s conservative base, repeatedly slamming the Florida senator for supporting the polarizing Gang of 8 immigration reform bill that was championed by senate Democrats, and which was politically poisonous to a number of establishment Republicans. Marco Rubio of Florida.
So Rubio now supports first hiring 20,000 more additional border agents, completing 700 miles of fencing, implementing mandatory e-verify and entry/exit tracking systems to prevent visa overstays, and reforming the legal immigration system. He admits his position may be at odds with a majority of the GOP. So far Rubio has been impressively unflappable and even in the heat of argument has maintained a likeability edge over Cruz. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) whose “supporters skew toward degree-holders more than any other top-tier candidate’s in the latest average of polls”. Cruz said, “I used the language of the Democrats who were pushing it…I have never once supported legalization. It’s not where Ted Cruz is focused but his team is down there and in full effect right now”.
“But given the fact that Cruz is now hitting Rubio, obliquely at least, on immigration, I’ve got to think it’s Rubio and that it’s coming soon”. Cruz now tries to deny his own words. The proposal would have replaced it with one that offered those immigrants legal status within the United States.
And as the National Review’s Jim Geraghty points out, “At no point did (Cruz) describe his amendment as a poison bill or procedural maneuver to derail the bill”. “I don’t know why they think they would benefit from that, but I’m happy to talk about immigration all day long because my guy’s solid on immigration, and their guy has a fatal flaw if you’re running for the Republican nomination”. “The Huckabee, the Santorum, lot of those folks, I think, are going to gravitate to Cruz as you move ahead”, said Gill. And, according to Cruz, he believed if his amendments were adopted, the bill would pass.
The tweets came after the two candidates exchanged verbal blows during their respective campaign stops on Saturday, during which Trump slammed Bush as an “embarrassment” and Bush called Trump a “jerk”. “I believe that is the compromise that can pass”.
Some of the polls that show heavy support for Trump have also shown him doing better among self-identified independents who lean Republican than among regular GOP voters.
“I like five candidates”, declared Republican Don Bisson, a 78-year-old retired businessman.
So next time you hear Cruz calling someone else a liar, consider the source.
Cruz told Van Susteren that it was “factually incorrect” to suggest he supported legalization, explaining that his amendment would make those here illegally “permanently ineligible for citizenship”.
You can disagree with Rubio, of course.
