Pistons find range to douse Heat in Miami
“Two Hall of Fame players missed shots”. Drummond scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Miami led 34-18 after one quarter, pushed the lead to 18 early in the second – and succumbed to a flurry of Detroit 3-pointers.
MLive’s David Mayo breaks down Pistons’ win over Heat Detroit’s 3-point shooting and late-game resolve were the differences in 93-92 win.
Caldwell-Pope had 14 points alongside Stanley Johnson, while Pistons team-mate Reggie Jackson had 18.
Up next for the boys from the Motor City will be the continuation of their three-game Eastern Conference road trip, playing the second game versus the Miami Heat this Tuesday. Jennings said his role until Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy calls upon him is “to be a great leader on the bench and cheer guys on, things like that”. However, the Pistons stormed back thanks to a 36-18 second quarter and hang around with the home team the entire second half.
Steve Blake (12 points) pulled the Pistons back in with his third and fourth 3-pointers of the night to cut the deficit to 83-81 with 7:51 remaining.
Pistons: PG Brandon Jennings was active for the first time since tearing his left Achilles in Milwaukee on January 24. He gained some confidence by hitting the deciding jumper tonight and is rolling, averaging 19.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.4 steals and 2.2 3-pointers over his last five games. As a team, Miami only made four of 18 attempts from downtown.
The Pistons were surging in the 2014-15 season with Jennings as the team’s main point guard and were starting to win until he sustained the injury which limited him to only 41 regular season games. Riley could very well make a move, but it will likely be for a three-point shooter that won’t hurt his chances at getting in a room with Durant. He played through a sprained right thumb the previous six games and hurt his wrist sometime in the past week, though coach Erik Spoelstra was unsure exactly when it happened. Hardaway essentially sat underneath it Tuesday, now that he’s a Detroit assistant.
