Vegas Strip Crash Driver Appears Zombie-Like in Court
Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson announced Tuesday that Holloway had been officially charged with murder with use of a deadly weapon, child abuse, neglect or endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident.
The recent picture of success deepens the mystery of how the former OR woman wound up in a Las Vegas jail, suspected of killing one person and injuring almost three dozen others.
Holloway told police she was trying to sleep in her auto with her daughter but “kept getting run off by security of the properties she stopped at”, according to her arrest report.
Several years ago, Holloway, a graduate of an alternative high school, received an award for overcoming adversity from the nonprofit Portland Opportunities Industrialization Center, which helps at-risk youths with education and job training.
Lakeisha Nicole Holloway, 24, appeared stone-faced during her initial hearing in Las Vegas Justice Court.
Lakeisha Holloway is due in a Las Vegas courtroom at 8 a.m. Wednesday. The child was in good condition and is now under the care of child services, Lombardo said. Results of blood testing for drugs and alcohol were not yet known, Wolfson said.
But on surveillance video taken Sunday, a source close to the investigation said, Holloway is seen driving her Oldsmobile along the Strip, creeping along with the flow of traffic, before suddenly accelerating and turning right onto the sidewalk in front of Planet Hollywood Resort.
“The videos obviously show intention”, said Nevada Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo in a press conference on December 21.
Jessica Valenzuela, 32, of Buckeye, Arizona, was killed and three others remain in a critical condition in hospital.
“It’s not safe to FaceTime while we walk the Strip”, he said.
“This is a horrendous and inexcusable act that has needlessly and tragically impacted countless lives”, Wolfson said in a statement. He did not know how many, but said it would be “multiple”.
Police said Holloway repeatedly drove her automobile onto the sidewalk, ramming pedestrians and street posts as bystanders pounded on the windows and tried to pull open her auto door to stop her. According to a police report, she then drove about a mile away on a flat tire, parked and asked a hotel employee to call police before surrendering.
Investigators said she ran out of money and they believe she was headed to Dallas to find her daughter’s father after they had a falling out.
Police and emergency crews respond to the scene of an incident along Las Vegas Boulevard, Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015, in Las Vegas. She ended up on the Strip, “a place she did not want to be”, and wouldn’t explain why she drove onto the sidewalk, according to the arrest record. Her court appearance lasted less than 5 minutes.
Metro police say the 24-year-old homeless mother who was living inside a auto with her three-year-old daughter did not seem distressed.
Among the people injured are four Pacific University students from Forest Grove, who were in Las Vegas for a wrestling tournament. The Skanner reported that Holloway was homeless during her freshman year in high school, but had since graduated.
McFerrin went on to say the center lost touch with Holloway after she got pregnant and left town. “I’m a mature young woman that has broken many generational cycles that those before me hadn’t”, Ms Holloway said in the video.
