Report says Drogba contacted by Chelsea about return to Premier League club
The Daily Telegraph reported on Friday that Roman Abramovich is considering inviting Montreal Impact striker and Stamford Bridge legend Didier Drogba back to the club in a coaching capacity.
The prospect of a return – likely as a member of the backroom staff with an eye toward greater responsibility in the future – inevitably sparked some intrigue in the wake of the upheaval in West London, but the Impact waved away any thoughts of the 37-year-old’s immediate departure after a brief spell in MLS.
“We would like to get him involved”, Hiddink told Fox Sports when asked about whether Drogba is an option as his assistant.
Since then, there has been mostly silence.
With a full off-season with the side, Drogba will only improve further on the field and that should care MLS teams who will face the Impact in 2016.
Since his move to MLS and the Montreal Impact last Summer, Drogba hit the ground running and contributed in big ways.
He added that clubs need former stars like Drogba around the team, either as coaches, in management or as ambassadors, and that “it is important that they give the club a big image”.
Jeune Afrique also reports that Drogba will join Chelsea to kick-start his post-player career path, starting with a smaller role and grow within the organization and build from there. He said at the end of the campaign he expects to return.
After winning a fourth league title with Drogba in 2014-15, the club went into a tailspin.
Chelsea, who won a Premier League and League Cup double last season, are now 16th place in the Premier League, two places and one point above the relegation zone after nine defeats in 16 games.
