The category kerfuffle will be one thing to look for Thursday morning. It will compete against The Big Short, Trainwreck, Joy, and Spy. (Mara’s actually surpasses that of her co-star, Cate Blanchett.) More questionable, though, was the HFPA’s decision to consider David O. Russell’s “Joy” and Ridley Scott’s “The Martian” comedies.
Maggie Smith – Nominee for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture “The Lady in the Van”: “I am absolutely thrilled to be nominated for a Golden Globe, and to be in such terrifically talented company”. Plus, since Newest = Best when it comes to voting members of the HFPA, singing sensation Gaga could win for her very first acting performance.
And that’s probably because none of the actors in the film are being campaigned for lead role nominations.
Sylvester Stallone got a nomination, for Creed.
The Golden Globe nominations are always a wild card, unpredictable and surprising, which is always part of the fun.
“On the other, it’s silly to ignore the profile boost that certain films and performances get from recognition on a highly-rated televised awards show”. First the movie failed to garner much individual support at the SAG Awards (only Rachel McAdams in a supporting role).
On the other hand, some films and performers were shut out of key categories. There are plenty of viewers who will be pleased by the three nominations for “Outlander”, Ron Moore’s ambitious adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling romance novels.
Spielberg wasn’t the only big-name director left off the Globes’ list. Originally slated for release next year, its late jump into awards season was rewarded with four nominations, including best picture, comedy, and nods for Steve Carell and Christian Bale. It was nominated for best picture, as well as best drama, best original score and Leonardo DiCaprio, who stars in it, is one of the Golden Globe nominees for best actor.
“‘Room” blew me away”, Schumer said. There are a lot of good movies and performances this year, and critics groups and awards voters have yet to reach any kind of consensus on the best of the best.
Michael Fassbender, best actor nominee for “Steve Jobs”: “This film, and working with Danny Boyle and our unbelievable cast, has been one of the most creative and fantastic experiences of my professional life”. Out of 30 slots, only two went to an actor of color (drama lead Will Smith, in “Concussion”, and supporting actor Idris Elba, in “Beasts of No Nation”).
The nominees in the best supporting actress category are Jane Fonda (“Youth”), Jennifer Jason Leigh for “The Hateful Eight“, Helen Mirren for “Trumbo”, Alicia Vikander for “Ex Machina” and Kate Winslet for “Steve Jobs”.
Australian film director George Miller has also been nominated for best director for Mad Max.
The Globe also give out honors for television. Uzo Aduba of Orange is the New Black was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a comedy series.
On the television front, no single series stood out from the pack, with six earning three Globes nominations each – American Crime, Fargo, Mr. Robot, Outlander, Transparent, and Wolf Hall.
Denzel Washington will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for making an “incredible impact on the world of entertainment”.
