Former President Jimmy Carter says his grandson has died
Carter described Jeremy as “a very special child” who was preparing to transfer to a university to be closer to family.
Jeremy Carter died after his heart stopped Saturday and he was rushed to a hospital but could not be revived, the Rev. Jeremy Shoulta of Maranatha Baptist Church told CNN on Sunday. Carter added that when Jeremy’s mother went to check on him, the young man’s heart had stopped. Unfortunately, doctors were unable to keep him alive and Jeremy slipped away in the early morning hours of Sunday.
No cause of death was immediately given. “So he went to his room to lay on the bed and when they went to see if he was OK, his heart quit beating”, Jimmy Carter said during his Sunday school class.
According to Journal-Constitution, Carter told the congregation today to “be filled with a sense of joy and thanksgiving, even in the face of sorrow”. The past few months have been a very emotional time for this church.
Earlier this year, he announced he had brain cancer.
Carter, a Democrat and one-time peanut farmer and former Georgia governor, served one term as U.S. president, from 1977 to 1981.
“Our church plays an important role in his [President Carter’s] life and he feels committed to his responsibilities here at the church”, said Shoulta.
“I should be joyful and thankful to God for giving me both life and freedom”, the 91-year-old author said.
The miracle drug that seemed to have cured Jimmy Carter turned out to be Keytruda, class of drugs called immunotherapy, which uses the body’s immune system to fight the cancer. He later clarified that he is continuing treatment.
