LGBT and Allied Community Dominates Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations
LOS ANGELES (AP) With many of this season’s film awards categories still wide open, the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations will help bring serious contenders into better focus.
The drama about the Hollywood blacklistTrumbo and the television series House of Cards with three nominations each, are leading the list of nominees for the twenty-second edition of the Screen Actors Guild Awards or better known as the SAG Awards.
The nominations of “Beasts of No Nation” and “Straight Outta Compton”, which both feature black male casts, came at a time when Hollywood movies have been criticized for lack of racial diversity.
Nominees for best dramatic ensemble are “Downton Abbey”, “Game of Thrones”, “Homeland”, “House of Cards” and “Mad Men”.
Unlike the Oscars and Golden Globes, SAG lets film distributors decide the categories in which to place their candidates.
The other nominees for best ensemble are the rap movie Straight Outta Compton, the Wall Street comedy The Big Short, the Netflix child soldier tale Beasts Of No Nation, and Spotlight, the movie about the Boston Globe journalists who uncovered sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests in MA.
The nominees for best supporting actress include Rachel McAdams for Spotlight, Kate Winslet in Steve Jobs, Alicia Vikander playing The Danish Girl, and Rooney Mara for Carol.
He will be competing with Michael Fassbender, who portrayed the Apple founder in “Steve Jobs”; Eddie Redmayne for his cross-dressing role in “The Danish Girl”; Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo”; and Johnny Depp as gangster-fugitive in “Black Mass”.
Kidman’s nomination proved bad films, if aired first on TV, can still nab award nominations.
Awards season kicks into full swing today when the Screen Actors Guild declares their nominations honoring excellence in film and TV acting.
However, Elba is the only individual minority nominee in the movie categories of the awards.
Spotlight, with its heralded cast, was expected to rule, especially in the best supporting actor category (Mark Ruffalo and Michael Keaton), where it was surprisingly denied. Over the past three years, 11 of 12 SAG winners proceeded to win the Academy Award (Tommy Lee Jones in Lincoln is the only miss.) All three ensemble cast winners later claimed the best pitcure Oscar.
Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight wasn’t given any love either.
Mirren was also nominated for best actress for ‘Woman in Gold.
