Women drivers, two-wheeler riders exempted: Kejriwal
The vehicle rationing scheme would be applicable from 8 AM to 8 PM on all days except Sunday and on cars with NCR and other states’ registration number plates, Kejriwal said.
Women drivers and CNG-certified vehicles are likely to be given exemption from Delhi government’s ambitious odd-even scheme, which comes into force from January 1 in the national capital. A trial of the scheme will run until January 15.
Announcing a unique plan, the Delhi CM said that 10,000 volunteers would help the authorities in encouraging people to leave their cars home.
Under this scheme, parking attendants have been instructed not to allow parking for odd cars on even days and vice versa.
Emergency vehicles like ambulances, those belonging to fire services, hospital services, prison, hearse, enforcement agencies will be exempted from the rule, said the CM.
Kejriwal also read out a long list of VIP category vehicles, also to be exempted, including that of the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India, Union Ministers and Governors and Chief Ministers of states and Union Territories “except that of Delhi”.
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to put stay on Delhi Government’s “Odd-Even formula” for cars which will be effective from January 1.
Kejriwal added that his cavalcade will not be exempted from the scheme but medical emergency will not come under its purview.
Pressure on public transport will be too much if everybody rushes to it and the only practical solution is vehicle pooling, Kejriwal said. “Let’s make this a movement of the people”. “This scheme is for you, for your children”.
The government will run 6,000 additional buses to accommodate numbers of passengers after the implementation of the scheme.
The court has also asked the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led-Delhi Government to take into consideration the issues raised in the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking exemption for disabled people.
