Giants’ Odell Beckham Jr. issues issues statement after 1-game suspension upheld
Beckham was suspended for New York’s game Sunday against Minnesota, but Norman did not face a suspension. The NFL said Tuesday that former Washington and Philadelphia wide out James Thrash will be the hearing officer for the appeal by the New York Giants receiver.
VP of Officials Dean Blandino admitted that Beckham should have been kicked out of the game.
Told about Wing’s comments Wednesday, Rivera said: “That’s one guy”. As he launched himself at the cornerback and smashed his own helmet into Norman’s, Beckham surrendered any and all moral high ground. If you’re naïve enough to think that way, then you better do some soul-searching yourself.
When asked if the Panthers hadn’t broken any league rules why he made the decision do away with taking the bat on the field, Rivera said, “because I’m going to hear it if I don’t”. The suspension was warranted, and Giants head coach Tom Coughlin deserves criticism for not pulling Beckham during the game.
“Acts that jeopardize the safety of players or expose them to unnecessary risk can not be tolerated”, Hanks said in his letter to Beckham on Monday.
Punter Brad Wing is a close friend of Beckham’s – they played together at LSU – and Wing was on the field when all the pregame Panthers antics were going on with the baseball bat carried by practice squad player Marcus Ball.
Yet I am glad that not only did the National Football League do the right thing by issuing the suspension but it got upheld upon scrutiny. Beckham released a statement on Wednesday apologizing to his team and teammates. “What happened the other day was embarrassing to them and embarrassing to me”.
It’s at least the second time this season Beckham has been punished for in-game conduct. The NFL upheld his one-game suspension.
Beckham was returning to his pre-game warmup when the player crossed the 50-yard line and walked to the 40 or 35-yard line on the Giants’ side of the 50, carrying a bat, Wing said. And Jerry Reese, who drafted me and gave me the opportunity to be a part of this organization.
An NFL Films clip shows Rivera apologizing to Coughlin for his players’ behavior when the two coaches met near midfield to shake hands after Sunday’s game.
Reports surfaced Monday that Beckham may have been upset after Panthers players allegedly used bats while taunting and possibly threatening him during pregame activities.
