Top scorer Abby Wambach plays last game for USA women’s team
The minute-long ad features Wambach in a lockerroom, packing up her gear and tossing the nameplate on her locker into the trash.
“I also think it’s an environment and it’s also an ego drop”, she said.
Wambach went on to talk about how women’s sports are given short shrift in America.
New York City FC midfielder Diskerud, the son of an American mother and Norwegian father, was raised in Norway and represented his native country at the Under-18 and U-19 levels before committing to the U.S.
We weren’t the only ones tearing up as Abby Wambach said goodbye to her team and fans after her final soccer game ever on December 16. Some of those friends, including Tom Hanks, Tiger Woods and Mia Hamm, expressed their admiration and support for Wambach and the positive impact she’s had on their lives after she announced her retirement.
Wambach made her controversial comments on a podcast, even apologizing to US Soccer president Sunil Gulati as she blasted his key employee, the one charged with getting the US squad to the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation. But I just think that this experiment that US Soccer has given Jurgen isn’t one that personally I’m into. She had two chances with her head in the opening minutes that China’s stout defense did well to stop.
That is why having a send-off game now, she said, was “not just the right thing for my friends, family and fans, but also for my teammates and myself and the coaches”.
Jurgen Klinsmann led the United States out of a hard group in the 2014 World Cup.
Wambach reflected on the state of youth soccer in the United States, the dangers of concussions and how the game can bring in more stars from within the country.
USA coach Jill Ellis expressed confidence that the younger players for which Wambach paved the way will step up to fill the void as the team prepares to qualify for next summer’s Olympic Games in Rio.
But she didn’t just get a medal.
“Players on the national team should be American”. She is focused on becoming an advocate for greater equality. She is going to work to make that change happen.
“I literally don’t want to be talked about as it pertains to being a soccer player”.
Notes: U.S. Forward Alex Morgan asked out of the game late in the first half after pulling up with what Ellis later said was an apparent hamstring pull in her right leg…. She dramatically took off her cleats to a standing ovation in the 72nd minute. So for her to cap off her journey with this team with a World Cup win – I don’t think there’s more of a high she could come off of.
