Howard Moore hired as UW assistant
The Badgers avoided a sweep from the state of Wisconsin and are now 1-0 under their new head coach, but Gard’s squad has a lot to work on with the 26 turnovers that would be tough to overcome in a Big Ten game. The Badgers defeated the UW Green Bay Phoenix 84-79 Wednesday at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Green Bay came into the game averaging 85.4 points per game, but the Badgers’ defense tightened up as Green Bay went scoreless for almost 10 minutes in the first half.
One big change for the Badgers was in the backcourt. With starters Bronson Koenig and Zak Showalter saddled with early foul trouble, Hill had by far the best game of his career.
After the Phoenix clawed within 74-71, Hayes hit a pair of free throws and converted a 3-point play. Jordan Fouse added 17. Nigel Hayes made all nine of his free throws.
Moore is a graduate and former player at Wisconsin where he played in 47 games for the Badgers from 1990-1995. I want to make sure the things that were put in place by this staff and Coach Ryan stay intact.
Green Bay is 0-18 against the Badgers in Wisconsin’s capital city and 1-21 in the teams’ all-time series. The Phoenix’s lone victory in the series was 88-84 in overtime on December 9, 2009. Wisconsin shot 7 out of 16 from three point range, and 23 of 32 at the foul line. Soderberg in 2000 and Stan Van Gundy in 1994 are the others. The result earned UIC its first-ever postseason win in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament; the Flames also led the Horizon League in defensive field goal percentage that year (62.8 points allowed per game) for the lowest mark in school history.
