The Mysterious, Surprising, Confusion In the Academy Awards Season
“Gaga’s nomination, in fact, reeks of the kind of palm-greasing for which the Globes are famous: the intervention of publicists, impresarios such as Harvey Weinstein and the stars themselves, who sometimes bestow lavish gifts like watches on the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association”. Beyond Orange is the New Black, five other Netflix shows-Bloodline, Grace and Frankie, Master of None, House of Cards, and Narcos-are up for awards. It was nearly a given that the film’s cast would be nominated for best ensemble.
With its two nominations, tiny broadcast outlet CW beat CBS’ single mention (for supporting dramatic actor Alan Cumming in “The Good Wife”) as well as NBC (which will air the Globes awardscast on January 10, but was completely snubbed on Thursday by the Globes). In fact, “Spotlight” received no acting nominations from the HFPA despite its best drama nomination and its rising status as one of the Oscar race’s top contenders. Judith Light of Transparent was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series, limited series, or TV movie. The film, which she co-wrote, also earned a nomination for best comedy or musical.
“Instead we see “Room” and ‘Spotlight, ‘ little indie movies, and that is sending a strong message to Hollywood that measurement does not matter they usually might should attempt more durable”.
Hulu won its first nomination (best comedy series) for its new comedy, Casual.
Golden Globes voters love throwing the biggest party every year, so it’s key that they invite the hottest stars with the biggest names. The category also includes The Peanuts Movie and 2 stop-motion efforts, the kid-friendly Shaun the Sheep Movie and the much more adult Anomalisa.
“Spotlight, ” the film about the Boston Globe’s coverage of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, received three Golden Globe nominations, including best picture drama.
For drama series, the HFPA nominated three newcomers: Fox’s smash hit soap opera “Empire”, USA’s paranoid thriller “Mr. Robot“, and Starz’s time-travel adventure “Outlander”. Up for best comedy are: Amazon’s “Transparent”, HBO’s “Veep”, Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black”, Amazon’s “Mozart in the Jungle” and Hulu’s “Casual”. You’re not alone. The movie, about a dad with psychiatric issues, debuted at Sundance almost two years ago and barely made a dent at the box office. Christian Bale and Steve Carell each received nominations for Best Actor for the film.
For the Best Performance By An Actor In A Motion Picture – Drama category, Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”), Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”), Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl”) and Will Smith (“Concussion”) are vying with each other, and among the actresses in the same category, there are Brie Larson (“Room”), Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”) and Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl”) who are pitted against Mara and Blanchett.
The Big Short, the testosterone-heavy, starrily cast movie about the financial meltdown of Y 2008, scored four nominations and will face off against The Martian (the sci-fi tale was shoehorned into the Globes’ comedy category) and 3female-centric comedies – Jennifer Lawrence’s Joy, Melissa McCarthy’s Spy and Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck. And since it’s one of the few shows where alcohol is permitted, and amusing man Ricky Gervais will be returning to host, it’s always a hilarious, live event where anything can happen.
