Peyton Manning misses practice with sore foot, ruled out vs Steelers
Osweiler will start Sunday’s game at Pittsburgh, Mike Klis of NBC 9News Denver reports.
The Denver Broncos have been feeding into the rumors about the future starter.
Manning is a competitor who rarely comes out of games or uses injuries as an excuse. Denver hasn’t scored an offensive touchdown in its last 23 possessions, not since the opening drive two Sundays ago. But in roughly 17 quarters, Osweiler has been sacked 17 times, including once for a safety Sunday. The Oakland Raiders linebacker added, “And he’s a young guy”. This is the first time he has had to work his way back, and the first time his team has had to seriously consider if he will be inserted back into the starting lineup when he gets healthy. Such a sentiment had developed after Manning’s late season swoon in 2014, largely due to arm fatigue late in the season, and in colder weather. Indeed, when he bottomed-out in that bad, eye-averting 29-13 loss to Kansas City, I assumed side effects of his neck injury had finally ended his career on the spot.
Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning returned to practice this week after sitting out the previous 31 days because of a partially torn plantar fascia in his left heel.
There’s nothing wrong with that latter point. That type of stuff comes back to beat you and it hurts you. At this moment, Osweiler isn’t winning a Super Bowl for Denver by carrying the team. “That’s all I know”.
Kubiak refused to name a starter until the staff watches Manning practice.
With Manning being shut down this week, I think that hurts his chances of taking over the starting job next weekend.
There was also another familiar face back on the field at practice Wednesday.
Osweiler was managing the offense well enough to win games. But the pass is just one aspect of the Broncos’ game this year. He ran for just 20 yards on 12 carries. Do we go any further?
Though the Broncos offense struggled Sunday, it’d be unfair to put the blame entirely on Osweiler.
It’ll be interesting to see what Denver does when Manning is ready to play. Especially if he’s got momentum in practice.
On Monday, Kubiak hinted at his plans for his QBs, but said he wasn’t prepared to say if Manning could return to practice or whether Osweiler would start against the Steelers (8-5).
“Brock is fine”, Kubiak said. And on Tuesday, the team did not list a quarterback news conference on its media schedule. The answer to that seems a little less certain than it was a few weeks ago. It’s a pivotal game for us to bounce back. “Just because your brother isn’t doing so well that doesn’t mean you have the right to get on him”.
