Cruz makes return visit to Arkansas as part of Southern tour
Though he’s grown his evangelical and tea bagger base because of his outrageous and vocal opposition to marriage equality, when in front of a pro-gay GOP donor at a recent Manhattan fundraiser, Cruz made a decision to play both sides in order to not put the donation at risk.
During the question period, one of the donors told Cruz that gay marriage was one of the few issues on which the two disagreed. He says that fighting same-sex marriage actually isn’t even in his top three priorities.
“No”, Cruz answered. “I would say defending the constitution is a top priority”. And that cuts across the whole spectrum – whether it’s defending [the] First Amendment, defending religious liberty, stopping courts from making public policy issues that are left to the people. “What Senator Cruz said before NY donors doesn’t comport what he told Iowa conservatives or the National Organization for Marriage”. “And so that is a core commitment”, he said.
“More Cruz double-speak”, Santorum’s spokesperson Matt Beynon stated. Here, he’s clearly using it to create a false sense that he’s a live-and-let-live guy, but when he’s in a different crowd, he’s putting forward a different face. Cruz also followed up his “No” by explaining, as he has on the trail, that his number one priority is “defending the Constitution” and suggesting that the issue should be sent back to the states.
Ramsey says Trump’s glibness and political incorrectness have grabbed attention but it’ll be Cruz’s strong game plan that’ll eventually carry the day.
“I know I won’t go to the polls”, said Beck, who said after Trump entered the race in June that he likes Trump personally but doubts his conservative credentials.
“These comments are nothing new”, spokeswoman Catherine Frazier told the publication.
SEN. TED CRUZ: “My view on gay marriage is that I’m a constitutionalist and marriage is a question for the states”. “There’s an Iowa Ted and a New York Ted”, said an advisor to a rival campaign granted anonymity by Politico to disparage Cruz. While appearing on “The Tonight Show” in 2013, they note, Cruz said “I support marriage between one man and one woman”.
Ted Cruz, R-Texas, celebrated his 45th birthday with a rally at the Apostolic Church of North Little Rock with an estimated 800 or more supporters jamming the church gymnasium. “I wanted a candidate that I believed prayed to God and believed in the constitution”. But Cruz has organized a deeper bench of influential supporters including state lawmakers, evangelical leaders, tea party activists and gun rights enthusiasts. He said that would keep many from seeing the Democratic candidates, and said he could understand the strategy.
I will say it is amusing reading the anonymous quote from advisors from other campaigns saying, “oh this is devastating, this is going to be a real problem”, “he says in private meetings the same thing he says publicly”. “If you want to change the marriage laws”.
