Montreal Impact and Chelsea both fight for Didier Drogba’s services
The Montreal Impact’s biggest star is reportedly being courted by one of the biggest soccer teams in England, a team Didier Drogba has played for.
Asked if the club were in talks to take Drogba now, Hiddink added: “The official process I don’t know, but I spoke openly from the bottom of the heart that such impact players can be huge for the club”.
“We definitely intend to get him involved”, the Dutch manager said.
He added that clubs need former stars like Drogba around the team, either as coaches, in management or as ambassadors, and that “it is important that they give the club a big image”.
Drogba made the move to the United States in July on a designated player contract for two seasons and scored 11 goals in 11 appearances for Impact.
“We are now in contact with Didier Drogba and Chelsea”, the club tweeted Wednesday. But our objective is to have him back for another season, as agreed in his contract.
The 2016 MLS season begins in March b ut Chelsea are now talking to Montreal with a view to securing Drogba’s services in a possible coaching role under interim boss Guus Hiddink, who replaced Jose Mourinho last week. This situation is out of our control.
Although the Montreal Impact has denied it, reports that Didier Drogba is considering a return to Chelsea – this time as assistant coach – are getting harder to ignore.
“He is a legend, both in and (outside) of the club”, he said.
“But he playing for Montreal, under contract”.
He also said he would visit his old teammates and may even train with Chelsea to get ready for the MLS season. After a season each in China and Turkey, he returned to Chelsea in 2014-15 to help them win a fourth league championship. They are in 16th place with a record of four wins, three draws and nine defeats – 20 points behind unlikely league leader Leicester. He led them to a UEFA Champions League title in 2012.
