Miss Columbia Responds to Miss Universe Controversy

Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, posted messages in English and her native Spanish, on Instagram Tuesday, reflecting on the Miss Universe mistake heard around the Universe.

Displaying no hard feelings towards Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach (Miss Philippines), Ms Gutierrez also used the post to congratulate her.

“And my destiny was this”, she wrote on Instagram. “I want to thank each and everyone of you who have sent messages of support and strength”, she captioned a shot of herself at the pageant that showed her hands in the shape of a heart. And my destiny was this.

Breaking her silence, in a video, on Harvey’s blunder, Miss Colombia said, “Everything happens for a reason, so I’m happy”.

Gutierrez put a positive spin on the incident as well, saying that it had resulted in Colombia and the Latin community “being talked about in every corner of the world”.

During the show’s broadcast, Harvey mistakenly named Miss Colombia as the new Miss Universe, when the title was supposed to go Miss Philippines.

Miss Universe of 2014, Paulina Vega of Barranquilla, Colombia, had already crowned Ariadna Gutierrez Arévalo, 21, of Sincelejo, Colombia. “It could happen to the best of us”, Shapiro continued.

Upon realizing his mistake he had to apologize before crowning the rightful 26-year-old actress and model from the Philippines on Sunday.

Ms Wurtzbach appeared stunned as she walked to the front of the stage alongside the crown-wearing Ms Arevalo before last year’s Miss Universe, also from Colombia, stepped in to remove the crown and place it on Ms Wurtzbach’s head instead.

Gutierrez’s kind words are in contrast with those of her angry supporters. “He was so well-intended, and he’s such a good guy, and it was really such a mistake that I hope people don’t hold this over him other than for just a good laugh and let it pass”, Shapiro said as he defends Harvey.

“I feel terrible for this young woman”, he said.

“Secondly, I’d like to apologise to the viewers at that I disappointed as well”. As well as the wonderful contestants.
