Johnny Manziel leads Cleveland Browns past San Francisco 49ers
Even teams with seven-game losing streaks, like the Browns, will be determined to win on gameday.
BLOCK PARTY: Browns kicker Travis Coons had a field-goal attempt blocked for the third straight game.
The young Browns QB has been yanked in and out of the starting quarterback spot enough times to make your head spin.
The Cleveland Browns defeated the San Francisco 49ers 24-10 on Sunday in a game that was not almost as close as the final score indicated.
In what may be the Brownsiest season of all time, it’s to be expected that the squad would set about negating their good 2016 draft position by winning a couple of meaningless games down the stretch. Against the 49ers, they nearly cut that number in half.
There are three games left in the season, three more games for Tomsula to rally and build his case that he has things pointed in the right direction. This, against a Browns team that was allowing opponents nearly 30 points per week. So what does that make the 49ers? Whatever it was that got the Browns to play the way they played on Sunday, it needs to happen week in and week out.
For instance: In the second quarter, the 49ers defense began to blitz Cleveland quarterback Johnny Manziel after falling behind 10-0.
Maybe the most damning development Sunday was the way Cleveland roughed up the 49ers on the ground.
The Browns got the ball back at their 20 with 4:12 left in the first half but failed to extend their lead.
In the fourth quarter, another pointless penalty negated any chance that the 49ers could compete in Sunday’s game.
Aside from that throw, Manziel was great on the move. Only there was a defensive holding penalty on Marcus Cromartie. Whether it was giving Isaiah Crowell the room to bust off two 50-plus yard scampers or the push in short yardage that allowed the Crow to demand pizza Lunchables be thrown on the field twice from one and three yards out (that means two rushing touchdowns, for those not in the know), the big guys up front did their job all afternoon. An issue that was not helped by the departing of offensive line coach Andy Moeller, the running game has been virtually nonexistent averaging less than 75 yards per game. Offensive line played the way that they did.
This season, while most quarterbacks see their passer rating under pressure drop by over 30 points, Manziel’s only slips from 91.9 to 84.2, and it actually went up against the 49ers – to 116.7 – when they were able to apply heat.
There will be a rush to find a scapegoat this week – an effort to explain this all away – but that’s foolhardy.
His one bad play was an incredibly awful, and predictable for that matter.
Head Coach Jim Tomsula and his staff failed once again to prepare the team for a road game, and this one was very winnable against a sad-sack Browns team. That was made abundantly clear Sunday. “We’re going to plan to travel out there and play a good football game”.
The 49ers need reinforcements nearly everywhere.
NOTES: RB Shaun Draughn started for 49ers rushing leader Carlos Hyde….
Where do you start?
“We have been struggling getting wins lately, and I think that is a huge aspect to get that win and finally get on the right side of the board”, Barnidge said. Manziel is still on a tryout basis with a ball club wondering if they should use a potential Top 5 pick on another quarterback.
