San Diego State beats Cincinnati 42-7 in Hawaii Bowl
Both of these teams are young and both of them find themselves with big wins against good teams like Miami (FL) for Cincinnati and Utah State for San Diego State, yet they also find themselves in big losses like Cincinnati’s disaster against USF or the Aztec destruction when they played California.
Any questions about how SDSU would play against Cincinnati in the Hawaii Bowl were answered in, oh, about 15 seconds. He returned the opening kickoff for all 100 yards.
San Diego State arrived in Honolulu last weekend for Thursday’s game against Cincinnati in the Hawaii Bowl.
Penny fielded the opening kickoff about 5 yards deep in the south end zone, followed his blockers to an opening down the sideline and was untouched en route to the fourth kickoff return for a touchdown in Hawaii Bowl history. We just built on that. A crowd of 14,537 settled in for what would be a long winter’s night, at least for UC. “They had a lot of guys talking, but we came out on top”.
For San Diego State, the win caps off a remarkable turnaround from a 1-3 start.
Pumphrey finished the season with 1,653 rushing yards and Chase Price had 1,008 to become the first Aztecs teammates to run for more than 1,000 yards in a season.
There are worse places to lose a bowl game, but the Cincinnati Bearcats could not have looked much worse in the Hawaii Bowl here Thursday.
“They’re a good football team”, Tuberville said. “You can’t play that way on offense”.
It was as thorough and dominant a performance as the Aztecs turned in during their turnaround. On the ground, Hosey Williams led the way with 727 yards and four touchdowns while Mike Boone added 717 yards and eight touchdowns.
The Bearcats came into the game with the nation’s fifth-most productive offensive, averaging 36 points and 559 yards a game.
Hosey Williams led UC rushers with nine carries for 50 yards.
He started up the middle for a few yards, then broke it outside and went untouched for the touchdown. NCAA statistics recognize only 100 yards. And after forcing a Cincinnati three-and-out, the Aztecs quickly marched down the field and scored again on a Chapman (8-of-11 for 113 yards) 14-yard touchdown pass to Mikah Holder.
However, the Aztecs were a completely different team when Mountain West play began and went undefeated to win the Mountain West Conference Championship Game over Air Force and enter the Hawaii Bowl with nine straight wins.
