NYC man faces 4 charges after Toronto machete attack
A 30-year-old man sustained injuries to his head and leg, which police described as serious but not life-threatening.
“It’s a relief that somebody like that is off the street”.
“I’ve never seen anyone openly attack someone like that”, said Yip.
They say the attack – which police call “unprovoked” – occurred around 5 p.m. Wednesday just north of the Eaton Centre.
“It was executed perfectly”, said Michael Soberal, manager of security, safety and sustainability for H&R REIT, said of his employee’s tackling of the man.
The first guard, Nathaniel McNeil, told reporters at a press conference Thursday that he charged into the suspect, applying his weight against him as his right hand carrying the machete pointed straight down towards the ground. He said he had never encountered a similar situation in more than five years as a security guard.
In the video, Bonaparte then kicks away a hunting knife the attacker has dropped and pries away the machete. He said a lot of people were in the area at the time.
Ted Salter from Paragon Security said he is proud of guards.
McNeil and the suspect, who now faces an attempted murder charge, were not hurt in the takedown. “For us, it wasn’t about hurting him; it was just neutralizing him to the point where he can’t hurt anyone else”.
He’s been arrested by police.
Police said they’re still seeking other witnesses. “The big guy took him down and the little guy did the handcuffs”.
In two videos provided by Paragon Security, the company that employed the guards who took down the suspect, a suspect can be seen swinging a machete at another man who has fallen to the ground, using a bag to protect himself.
