Skier Nearly Hit by Drone

Austrian skier Marcel Hirscher wants organisers to make sure nothing like the drone falling happens again.

FIS racing director Markus Waldner has explained why there was a drone being used at the event in the first place.

Following the race Hirscher, victor of two gold medals at the 2015 FIS Alpine World Championships, labelled the incident as “horrible”.

“This is frightful”, said Hirscher when told about what nearly happened to him. Legal restrictions in Italy for using drones at such events wasn’t as tight as in some countries.

The company responsible for the camera drone, sports marketing agency Infront, said in a statement “the circumstances leading to (the crash) are now being examined”.

As for Hirscher, he finished second in the slalom contest, pretty impressive considering he was having to dodge not only poles but an out-of-control drone, too. “I am very angry”.

Few Colorado ski resorts have yet to identify specific penalties for customers caught using drones on ski slopes.

Hirscher, meanwhile, took to Instagram after the race to publish a screen shot of his close call with the drone and captioned it, “Heavy air traffic in Italy”.

Waldner says that although they had agreed to allow drones, they weren’t supposed to fly right over the race course. “Detailed technical analyses will be conducted and more information will be given as soon as possible”, the broadcast partner issued in a release.
