Yankee Stadium game intriguing to Hoosiers
It should be unusually warm weather in NY for this one so expect the offenses to make plays and for this one to go over the total. The Hoosiers survived SIU by one point and escaped with a seven-point win over Wake Forest. Conversely, Indiana has given up 40 or more points four times, while Duke has done so only three times. The Wolfpack entered the year with whatever momentum could possibly be carried over from a 4-1 close to 2014, and while the competition was a few rungs on the ladder below stout, the Pack dominated their way to a 4-0 start.
Then came the close losses.

A bowl game victory is the next big thing for the program to accomplish to take the next step forward so a win this postseason could still salvage the season. Bolstered by a front line of All-Americans in senior left tackle Jason Spriggs and junior right guard Dan Feeney that gave up a Big Ten-best 13 sacks on the year, the Hoosiers are powered by senior quarterback Nate Sudfeld, junior running back Jordan Howard, and sophomore wideout Simmie Cobbs, Jr. If you’re looking for Boxing Day excitement, this football game between basketball schools at a baseball stadium (Yankee Stadium) is must-watch.
Wilson’s defense still hasn’t gained traction.
The Hoosiers don’t turn the ball over often (just 11 times all year, compared to 18 times for Duke) and the Blue Devils haven’t done a great job of forcing turnovers this year.
“I can’t see them wholesale changing what they do”, Johns said, “but I would imagine there will be some wrinkles”. Despite losing Tevin Coleman to the NFL, IU ranks 20th in Off. S&P+. From there, State won the games it should have and lost the others only getting the better of Wake Forest, Boston College and Syracuse, who combined for a 3-21 league record. IU QB Nate Sudfeld has completed 60.7 percent of his passes with 24 touchdowns and five interceptions and he also rushed for five touchdowns.
Duke’s 4th Quarter offense (49th) vs. Indiana’s 4th Quarter Defense (112th): Duke’s offense gets better as the game goes along, going from 94th in the first, to 65th in the second, 54th in the third and 49th in the 4th. IU should be able to put points up because of balance, however.
The Odds: Indiana is a 2 point favorite against Duke. Then came the eight lateral, kickoff return debacle in the loss to Miami.
Well, it’s IN in a bowl game where they have a good shot of staying competitive if not winning. It got to the point where it felt like this season was another missed opportunity, much like last season where Sudfeld got hurt in October against Iowa and the Hoosiers limped to a 4-8 record. The offense, a pass-first unit that can’t pass very well, couldn’t keep up.
It was a season of streaks for Kevin Wilson and the Hoosiers, who were the Big Ten’s highest scoring team (36.2 ppg) and also its worst scoring defense (37.1 ppg). He has a diverse, if only reasonably effective, receiving corps, with seven guys catching at least 17 passes and none catching more than 48. Of course, defense has at times proven to be a theoretical exercise for Indiana.
