UK doctors and nurses beat Bieber to top Christmas charts
Instead, the NHS Choir’s mash-up of Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water and Coldplay’s Fix You emerged as the popular favourite in the run-up to Christmas.
When Bieber heard about his worthy musical opponents, he took to Twitter to urge his 72 million followers to throw their support behind the charity single to push its sales ahead of his own.
Before the result was revealed Bieber tweeted: “I’m hearing this UK Christmas race is close… but the NHS Choir single is for charity. So…” Let’s do the right thing and help them win.
All proceeds from the NHS Choir’s single will go to a selection of charities including Carers UK and Mind. “So we have to send him a massive “thank you”, Joe Blunden, an NHS communications manager who is one of the organisers of the choir’s chart campaign, said. [NHS Choir, ] good luck…This is what it’s all about.
The Canadian pop star’s Love Yourself was ahead in the United Kingdom earlier this week during a see-saw sales battle – but on Thursday Bieber tweeted that it was “ok not to be #1” and urged fans to “do the right thing” and boost a NHS choir charity single to the coveted spot. “If we got to No 1, it would be insanity – but a really good version of it”, NHS choir member and children’s doctor Katie Rogerson had said.
Bieber still claims three positions in the charts with Love Yourself at No 2, Sorry at No 3 and What Do You Mean at No 5. According to the Daily Mail, the contenders had been neck-and-neck all week, with just 622 sales between them on Christmas Eve, but a late surge put A Bridge Over You at No. 1.
In the final shopping week before Christmas alone, 25 sold almost 450,000 copies.
‘There couldn’t be a more deserving group of winners’.
This week she toured radio studios with the doctors, nurses, physios that make up the Lewisham and Greenwich choir after a Facebook group promoting the charity single garnered more than 183,000 supporters.
Meanwhile, Adele has scored the biggest selling album of Christmas 2015.
Her album, 25, has already made chart history and now holds the top spot for the fifth week running.
