Raiders’ Charles Woodson gets Gatorade bath in last home game
As promised, Woodson lined up for a single play on offense – a failed reverse on the game-winning overtime series.
“This team is going to get so much better, really, really soon”, Woodson told the crowd afterward.
With Woodson’s speech, the Raiders were able to pull off an overtime win with Sebastian Janikowski kicking a 31-yard field goal that sealed the game.
“I’m just ecstatic to be part of the C-Wood era”, Roberts said. “It was a little much for me. You guys welcomed me back with open arms as if I never left”. “That’s the way it goes sometimes”.
Derek Carr then hit Michael Crabtree on a fade route one play later for a touchdown, and a catch by Seth Roberts for a two-point conversion gave the Raiders a 20-17 lead.
In what may have been the final National Football League game played at O.co Coliseum, the Chargers and Raiders decided regulation wasn’t enough.
Oakland Raiders free safety Charles Woodson (24) carries the ball against San Diego Chargers inside linebacker Manti Te’o (50). In the second half, the Raiders didn’t convert a single first down.
“He is not able to be himself on the short week”, head coach Jack Del Rio said. He’s a great Raiders. “I just so happened to run into him”. The Chargers lost the game after failing to convert on a fourth down.
It is a shame the game wasn’t almost as good as the post game in what was likely Oakland Rainders DB and probably Hall-of-Famer Charles Woodson’s final home game. “Doesn’t make it any easier losing another one like that”.
Wonder how many dry eyes were in the house on this night? Denico Autry sacked Rivers for a safety in the third quarter and Malcolm Smith forced a fumble on David Johnson that Benson Mayowa almost returned for a Raiders touchdown. Crabtree has been making extremely few plays the past six weeks.
But in the end, the night belonged to No.24, who after it was over, shared the moment he made the decision that this would be his final season in the National Football League. Woodson got a loud ovation as he was introduced last with the defensive starters and was the only Oakland captain for the pregame coin toss.
Inside the Coliseum, fans appeared focused on the game and not the team’s future. Others handed out thousands of “Stay in Oakland” signs to fans entering the stadium.
And on fourth-and-3, Philip Rivers’ pass went incomplete, and the Raiders had their victory for Woodson’s Oakland swan song.
This game was about coming back, floundering around, surviving long boring periods and many mistakes… He’ll be a low-end WR3 against the Chiefs in Week 17.
San Diego’s Kendall Reyes intercepted a pass to set up a seven-play drive capped by Donald Brown’s one-yard touchdown run, but Oakland answered with Latavius Murray’s 22-yard touchdown run to equalize at 7-7. The Chargers were backed up on a holding call but got back to the 30 to attempt another field goal.
Chargers players, paid entertainers, held up their end.
Carr completed 23 of 38 passes for 204 yards and one touchdown with one interception.
San Diego State rushed for 207 yards, topping the 200-yard mark for the 10th consecutive game, and finished with 336 yards of total offense.
