Shots fired inside North Carolina shopping mall
Keith R. Trietley, a public affairs officer for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, told reporters that officer Thomas Ferguson was at the mall when he heard multiple shots.
Police say one person has been fatally shot following an altercation between two groups with a “history of feuding” inside Northlake Mall in North Carolina.
It is not immediately clear if Westbrook fired at the police officer.
The Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services Agency said it treated one patient with a leg injury, one patient with an asthma attack and one patient in labor.
Throughout the fight, a weapon was brandished & shots have been fired about 2 p.m.at Northlake Mall in Charlotte, Putney stated.
An off-duty officer who was working at the mall heard the shots and responded to the scene, Putney says in a written statement.
One people pulled a gun and opened fire and injured one of the men, various reports quoted witnesses as saying. Witnesses tell WBTV the shooting was in retaliation to a shooting that happened last week involving the deceased suspect’s brother.
“I heard “get on the ground, stop, stop, move, move” and my Dad taught me to run”, Daniels said.
“People with newborn babies were getting trampled over she said people were crying hysterical looking for their teenaged children”, she said. “The first thing I did was run to the storage unit, the second thing I did was hide in the storage unit, the third thing, If I had to I would have fought”‘ she said.
Additional off-duty officers showed up and tried to help Westbrook but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
He did not identify the man who died, or the officer, who has been placed on administrative leave, following police protocol.
